Gutters |

Why do I need gutters? The purpose of gutters is to collect rain water from the roofing area and disperse the water away from your home. A gutter system installed incorrectly can lead to damaged soffits and fascia, shingles, building foundations, driveways, walkways, and landscaping. Types and StylesThere are many different gutter materials to choose from including steel, aluminum, vinyl, and copper. Many gutter systems are sold in 10’ sections and require many seams fastened and then caulked which can cause concern for future leaks. Aluminum gutters is the only system which is fabricated seamless on site to ensure a proper fit with no leaks. Although the gutter itself is seamless, the term seamless is somewhat loose as all outside and inside corners are separate pieces and do require special sealing and fastening. How do I know what I need? The most common size gutters used today is 5”. 6” gutters may sometimes be required for steep pitch roofs or slate and tile roofs. Large spans between downspouts may require a larger 6” gutter, but in any case, the following guidelines must be used to insure enough downspouts are in place to properly disperse the water. For most applications, the following guidelines will apply.
For example, if your roof is 50 ft. long and 20 ft. to the peak you will require the following…. 50 X 20 = 1000 square ft. of roof area. Requires (2) 2” x 3” downspouts or (1) 3” x 4” downspout. Some other considerations are length of gutter, inside and outside corners, and pitch of roof. Typically you will need 1 downspout for every 40’ of gutter as you can only pitch a gutter so much. |
